- There is no such thing, at this stage of the world’s history in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dare write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my papers, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

- Regarding the press release from the Council of Ministers of 22 February 2002, the Belgian authorities pointed out that:
- The financial analysts' views are borne out by statements by the Company's then CEO, Mr Bon, as reported in several press articles, and by the French authorities themselves at the time of their December 2002 notification .
- a new press code was adopted by the Assemblée Nationale on 24 August, an analysis of the justice system has been carried out with the aid of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
- Prophete and Pantherwerke also point out that, according to a press release, the owner of Biria AG has sold the business to the Lone Star Group, a private equity fund.
- On its homepage Biria announced planned sales of 850000 bicycles in 2005, which would have implied a further increase in sales compared with 2004. Prophete and Pantherwerke also point out that, according to a press release, the owner of Biria AG has sold the business to the Lone Star Group, a private equity fund.
- A number of SEL’s press releases confirm this. Investing in PM4, refurbishing PM3 and closing down PM2 had the additional advantages that it was cheaper than building new greenfield mill both for newsprint and magazine paper and it allowed SEL to introduce new capacity while phasing out old capacity, which is necessary in order not to suffer from introducing capacity without corresponding demand.
- A press release of the Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance announced the appointment. In the same press release, the Government repeated its commitments: ‘On a proposal from the company's board of directors, the Council of Ministers has decided to appoint Thierry Breton chairman of France Télécom … To that end, the new chairman will immediately carry out an inventory of the company, the findings of which will be communicated to the board in the weeks ahead and which will form the basis for a financial recovery and strategic development plan enabling the company's debt to be reduced while building on its strengths.
- Pretty much the same factors are at play: haste in carrying out huge acquisitions (in one year, from 1999 to 2000, France Télécom devoted EUR 65 million to this), insufficient attention to the economic, political or geopolitical risks, particularly imprudent financing arrangements … In this climate of disquiet, urgency and doubt, the company embarked as from 1999 upon an ambitious and disorganised external growth programme, according priority to access to the UK and German markets’. See also the press release of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance of 5.12.2002: ‘… the company is faced today with an unbalanced financial structure and a need for own funds and refinancing in the medium term.

- The financial analysts' views are borne out by statements by the Company's then CEO, Mr Bon, as reported in several press articles, and by the French authorities themselves at the time of their December 2002 notification . Although the French authorities maintain that the opinion of France Télécom's former CEO is irrelevant in view of the circumstances in which it was formulated, it nevertheless remains that that opinion was borne out by the new CEO appointed in October 2002 when, at his hearing on 5 December 2002 before the Senate finance committee, he also stated that the group was in a worrying situation: ‘Despite being faced with huge debts, the company did not seem to have woken up to the fact that its credit rating was being downgraded, that it no longer had access to the capital markets ...’.
- On that date, since the company […] had withdrawn, the State departments received two firm proposals of capital contributions and repurchase of the entire capital from the French groups Butler Capital Partners (BCP) and […].On 27 September 2005, France published a press release stating that, on the basis of an in-depth examination of the two proposals, the proposal lodged by the BCP group was chosen because, while being the most acceptable from the financial point of view, it was in the best position to deal with the interests of the company, the public service and jobs. BCP’s initial proposal put forward a negative price of EUR […] million and was the lowest estimate of the negative price. That initial offer from the potential purchasers provided expressly for the possibility of adjusting their initial proposal following the carrying out of audits. The French authorities stated that the initial price was revised upwards following the audits presented on 16 December 2005 owing to objective elements influencing the regulatory and economic context in which SNCM operates which occurred after the submission of the proposal on 15 September 2005. The negative price was thus revised to EUR […] million. The negotiations between the French authorities and the future purchasers made it possible to lower that figure to EUR 142,5 million, increased by the payment of a part of the expenses relating to the retired employees mutual benefits society (EUR 15,5 million).
